Georgia Fire Department Recipient of National Campground Contest
Cordele KOA Identified Local Need To Support Local Firefighters and Community

The statistics are alarming, and the current economic downturn is negatively impacting fire departments across the country. According to a comprehensive national survey of firefighters sponsored by Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. The study polled 30 percent of all fire departments in the country, revealing that more than half of departments (51 percent) have had to increase fundraising efforts.

Thanks to a unique national campground owners contest announced last year, the Crisp County Fire Department in Georgia received a $10,000 grant. Last year, Leavitt Recreation & Hospitality Insurance and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company launched a competition among campgrounds around the country. One campground, Cordele KOA, was selected the winner and allowed to direct a $10,000 grant to a local fire department of its choice. Norma Perkins, the general manager of Cordele KOA, nominated Crisp County Fire Rescue for the grant.

“Applications were at last year’s KOA rally and I just decided to nominate Crisp County Fire Rescue,” said Norma Perkins. “Firefighters are asked to do so much and with limited resources, it’s nice to be able to support them and show our appreciation.”

At a special grant presentation Fire Chief Ray Lunsford and members of the community gathered to celebrate the national grant awarded, along with Jimmy Tumblin, Norma Perkins and representatives from Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. Thanks to the contest, the fire department unveiled six new automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and various medical supplies to strengthen rescue operations in the community.
